Fun in the leaves

The Haps Lately

Well, I'll try here to update, but darn it, it's hard to find time to do almost anything! So there may not be a lot of words, I'm just going to try to show you pictures, cause that's what you want anyway!

The day we brought Nora home, Fogg took Reed down to Salt Lake City to an event called "Touch a Truck". It's basically a parking lot full of trucks, tractors and large machinery for kids to climb on and honk the horn and pretend to drive. Fogg said that Reed fell asleep in the car and when they got there, Reed saw all the trucks and said "whoa!".

We went for a hike at Snowbasin on Friday. It was more of a walk but it was beautiful to get outside, see the changing leaves and breath fresh air. We ran into some friends and generally enjoyed an hour or so outside. Reed had a good time finding rocks to throw.
what am I even doing in this picture?

Saturday, we went to a place called Black Island Farms. It was the whole "autumn/harvest" thing - you know, hayrides, pig races, pumpkin patches. Here are a few pictures from our day.

And of course, we are just getting to know our little Nora. She is a very good baby so far, we are still working on the schedule and night times but mostly she does great and doesn't cry much. At her one week appointment which was a few days earlier than that, she was already back up to her birth weight and looking great!

Nora Margaret

Well, I'm not sure how long this will take to get posted, I've got to write in between naps and feedings and all the other stuff we have going on! Currently both kiddos are napping so we'll see how long that lasts to get other things done.

As you know from the last post, I was supposed to go in on Thursday morning to get induced. After my appointment on Tuesday morning, I had been feeling contractions all day, all night and all day Wednesday. They weren't painful and they were very inconsistant so I was thinking that we would still have the induction rather than go naturally. Wednesday evening I packed all the bags, got everything ready to go then went to bed. Right before bed I had two contractions that were a bit more notable than they had been. Once I laid down for the night around 9:30, they were very noticable and I had to focus a bit through them. After about an hour, I went downstairs (cause I wasn't sleeping anyway) and started timing them. I had to really stop and breath through them at this point. They were 8 minutes apart lasting about 2 minutes. At about 11, they turned to every 3 minutes and were getting crippling. I waited as long as I could to tell Fogg to let him sleep. At midnight I decided it wasn't worth waiting anymore, I was sure I was in full blown labor. I went upstairs and woke him up saying "Fogg, it's time to go.". He was really confused cause he thought we were leaving at 7am and it was only midnight. I said that I was very much in labor and we needed to go now. We packed up and headed out at about 12:20. The contractions were getting harder and harder to deal with as we drove.

Once we got to the hospital, I had several contractions while trying to walk to the labor and delivery department. Fogg went ahead and I got on all fours in the middle of the hall to get through another contraction. A nurse walked up to me and I immediately recognized her as my most favorite nurse from when I had Reed. She has had four kids all natural so I knew she would be a great source of strength for me as I attempted a drug-free birth. We got in the room and she checked me - 5cm dialated. They called my doctor and we went through a few more contractions. She checked again about 20 minutes later and I was a 6-7. They called the doctor again to come in now. I got in the bath and had several contractions there. Once the doctor got there I got out of the tub and she checked me again - 8cm. She told me to let her know when I felt like I needed to push. After that I got four contractions right in a row that were getting significantly worse. I was handling all of this great, trying to cast out my negative thoughts about doing this without drugs. Clearly I was in transition - getting fully dialated - the most painful part. She checked me after those four stacked contractions and I was still an 8. They let me get back in the tub. After only three major contractions (with major feelings of pushing) I got out again. Once I got to the table and they got everything prepped for birth, she checked me again - fully dialated and ready to push. She broke my water and noted that not much came out. I pushed at the next contraction but it didn't make much feel better! I was starting to cry and scream. In hindsight, mostly cause I was scared. After that push, the doctor told the nurse to call nursery now and told me that with the next good push the baby was coming out. So I bared down with all I had, crushed Fogg's and the nurses hands, and pushed hard. Out came our baby at 2:31am! She came out fast, they all yelled for me to stop pushing for a second while the doctor did something.

My doctor noted that the baby was small, smaller than she expected and that it was a girl! Throughout the whole labor, she noted how well the baby was dealing with the labor with all the potential problems that could have happened with the low fluid and two vessel cord. They took her while the doctor had to do a few repairs on me (I guess I was a bit too forceful with those pushes...). They also collected the cord blood and put the placenta aside for donation to search and rescue dog training.

Here are some pictures of the first few moments of her life. She weighed 6 pounds 5 ounces and was 19 1/2 inches long.

So I did it! I made it through with no drugs at all! Nora fed immediately for about an hour which is great. The second she came out, I seriously felt so good. I could walk and move and I didn't feel weird at all. It was nice to feel so normal so quickly. The days after I'm a little sore but overall, I feel so much better than the last birth. They took her to the nursery around 4:30 and took us to a recovery room to sleep for a few hours. I tried but had a hard time after all that adrenaline pumping through me.

Later that day, Reed came to visit. He was a little shy to begin with but after a few visits, he really warmed up to her. We had the baby and Reed exchange gifts which seems to have gone very well. Nora got Reed a stuffed Mickey Mouse which is very excited about. He gave Mickey a hug and kiss when he saw him. Reed gave Nora a little teddy bear and insisted that where ever the baby went, so did the bear. He also started hugging and kissing her. Here are some pictures of the two of them.

We also got visits from Nana and Papa Branch, Pete and Amy Gompert, Dawn and Travis Webb and Sarah Heilig. The next day we got visits from Bryan and Tracy Dwyer and James and Michelle Scrip.

Nora tested really high on bilirubin levels on Friday and they had to start putting her under lights in the morning. I would feed for an hour then they would put her under lights for 3 hours. Luckily she responded really well after 24 hours of treatment and she went from the high level to below the low level. We haven't had to do any follow up treatment and go in on Monday for another check to make sure we are in the clear. Because she was born at 2:30 in the morning, that meant I had to be discharged 48 hours later. Luckily after they discharged me, they let me stay in the room a few more hours to sleep and feed while she finished her light therapy. We left at about 10am on Saturday morning!

She is a very tiny baby compared to Reed so I'm just getting used to how to handle her and make sure she is fed enough. We are working on the schedule and feeding, the first night home was a little hard but we'll work on it. We are also really enjoying the vast difference with having a girl. I believe she is effectively working on getting Fogg wrapped around her finger...

Well, I did the whole post in only two sittings, not too bad. Off to do some other things on the to do list now. Catch up with you soon - hopefully!

38 Weeks, Babymoon and Eviction Notice

Today I am 38 weeks along and we won't make it to 39 weeks. Here is the story:

I had another ultrasound today to check out the amniotic fluid levels. Usually, they should be around 10-12 (units, I don't know what). A month ago it was 8.8, a tad low but still ok. This is why I was drinking a lot of water and trying to keep it up. 2 weeks ago it was an 8. From 5-8 is concerning, under 5 is bad and they will usually go right for delivery. Because I am now far enough along to be considered "full term" anything below 8 means we call it. Well, this morning I was 6.8. Not 5 but not 8. She luckily gave me a choice and we talked about it rather than walking straight over to Labor and Delivery. She said that we need to deliver within 2 days. I didn't want to do today (not ready mentally yet!) and she hoped to not do Wednesday due to her schedule. So we are pushing it to the last minute, going in on Thursday. I'm supposed to watch my kick counts and movement for the baby and if they get too low or I go into labor, then I head in before Thursday.

The ultrasound says that the baby is about 6 pounds 10 ounces - normal. The baby didn't move a ton and the heart rate was 140. When the doctor checked the heart rate it was a bit lower at around 120 (slightly concerning to her). They also had a hard time getting the heart rate of the cord. The baby scored 6 out of 8 on some sort of scale which is another reason to be done. I didn't get much info about that scale but I'm guessing it's sort of like an APGAR score but for in utero.

Then she checked me and I'm dialated to 4 cm already. So she thinks I might even go into labor on my own before Thursday. She stripped a little bit of my membranes which can help labor along as well. I did have several contractions throughout the day that have differed from what I've been having up to this point so maybe that means full out labor is just around the corner?

I headed up to work to complete a few things before I officially take off for my leave. The plan is to lay low tomorrow and get mentally ready for Thursday morning and if things happen before then, then great!

Here is my 38 week picture to round out the collection - boy it looks out there today!

Fogg and I were able to get away for the weekend. I found a great groupon for a condo in Park City and mom generously watched Reed for a day and a half so we could enjoy some last minute alone time. The condo was fantastic, here are some pictures of it.

We headed up on Saturday afternoon and met up with some friends for dinner. Sunday morning we got some breakfast then back to the condo to spend some time in the hot tub and heated pool. We just got to chill for the morning watching football and eating some sub sandwiches at the condo. I took a nap while Fogg got in a mountain bike ride. Then we went down to the outlet mall and got a few deals before having a nice italian dinner on Main Street. We headed back home on Monday morning, we both had the day off of work. We spent the rest of the day just puttering around the house, spending time with Reed and I got a massage.

So the eviction notice is officially on for Thursday. Please send your good vibes and prayers my way, I need all the back-up I can use to get through this delivery, hopefully drug-free. Hopefully I can get a little sleep in the next two nights to prep for the big day! Next time you hear from me, it will hopefully be about a new arrival!

Cheers~

37 Weeks

What a week it's been. Reed got sick on Tuesday night, threw up in his bed so I stayed up with him for a few hours till he was done puking and put him back to bed. He developed an ear infection and strep throat later on in the week, requiring a doctor visit on Friday morning. Meanwhile, I got the stomach flu on Thursday night, early Friday morning. I assume I got whatever Reed had on Tuesday night but you never know. Anyway, with my fluid levels already being sort of low, then purging anything left, I got a bit worried about being too dehydrated. I called the doctor and she got me in Friday morning to get me an IV. I felt crappy the rest of the day, not able to eat or drink much but at least I stopped throwing up. By Saturday morning, I felt back to my old self! Thank God for the IV, it saved me. Reed got to the doctor on Friday morning as well, got on antibiotic for his ear and strep and is on the road to recovery as well. Now Fogg is fighting a sore throat...

So, today we got to the 37 week mark. I had my appointment Monday morning and had another non-stress test. Everything looked great. The baby has been moving a ton despite also getting the flu (it will pass through the placenta to the baby). But because of the sicknesses, we all need to be healthy before this baby comes! I'm only dialated to 1cm so no real threat of this baby coming in the next week or so. I get an ultrasound to check the fluid levels again next week and hopefully they are still good to make it just one more week before we have this baby!

Week 37

Pregnancy Highlights:

How Far Along: 37 Weeks

Size of baby: probably around 6 and 1/2 pounds, maybe a tad less.

Maternity Clothes: I'm feeling very, very big these days. When taking the picture above, I felt like I looked just absolutely enormous. With the weather getting chilly starting tomorrow, I can break into some of my long sleeve shirts that fit pretty good. Pants are a problem and since it's going to be too cold for skirts, I've invested in two new pairs of yoga pants to wear. My jeans barely fit and they are super uncomfortable so I wear them for only "special" occasions.

Gender: is it a girl or is it another boy? still have no clue but getting anxious to find out soon.

Movement: getting more slow, rolling movements with very specific knee, foot, elbows poking out. All of my organs feel like they have to shift when the baby moves cause it's getting tight in there.

Sleep: doing alright with sleep lately. Some nights I sleep very well, others are more challenging.

What I miss: my old body.

Cravings: this past week or so has been apples and tortilla soup from Cafe Rio.

Symptoms: still a lot of heartburn. My back has been pretty sore lately both from the weight of the baby pulling and probably from a night of throwing up.

Best Moment this week: Getting over the stomach flu so quickly. Also, I am super excited about a little "babymoon" that Fogg and I get to take this coming up weekend. Reed will spend the weekend with Lala while Fogg and I get two nights of R&R, eating out and a massage. Yesterday at the doctor, there was a picture of a baby on the screen in the lobby and without prompting, Reed saw it and said "baby!" then pointed to my belly and said "mommy's baby", then pointed to himself and said "Reed big brother!". He totally gets it and it's so darn cute! One more thing - I only have one more week of work after this week - yay!

Cheers~

Reed says

Reed has been saying a lot of funny stuff lately. I wanted to write it down for my memory but thought I'd share as well.

In "Where the Wild Things Are" there are several creatures. Reed insists that one of them is the mommy and one of them is the daddy. It was not clear to me that they even had genders, but he will always point them out.

Reed threw up the other night in his bed. We washed his comforter and sheets. I decided to not put the comforter back on the bed (mostly cause he sleeps on it rather than under it and I ended up just washing it a lot). I folded the comforter and put it on the end of his bed on the floor. Tonight he saw it and told me "threw up on it" and sort of leaned forward to act out the throwing up. He said "yucky. 'Daddy! Daddy!'" He was explaining how he called for Daddy after he threw up and it was yucky. He told me this story several times, explaining in his limited vocabulary what happened two nights ago.

He has another book about becoming a big brother. The first several pages has the mommy, the daddy, the baby and the big brother. On the 4th or 5th page the mommy is not on it and the daddy is telling the big brother that sometimes babies cry to tell us something. Every time we get to this page, Reed will ask where the "mommy go?". I always tell him that she is taking a nap. The next page, the mommy is still not there, the daddy explained that the baby needed a new diaper and needed some milk. "Where mommy go?" She is still taking a nap. Next page they are all back together to look at pictures of the big brother when he was a baby and Reed will comment that the "mommy wake up".

On a similar note, Reed will always tell me he "wake up" when I go to get him up in the morning or from his nap. As if him singing or banging on the door wasn't enough, he tells me anyway.

I will ask him how his day was when I get home. He will usually ignore me because he is playing with something or watching a cartoon. He will say "ummmm, daycare!". I'll ask him if he had a good day and he will say "mac n cheese!" I'm not sure if that's what he had for lunch or if that is what he is requesting for dinner but he says it anyway.

We call London "londy-boo". Just an evolution of nicknames and it's our little endearing term for him. Reed called him doggy for quite some time but recently realized his name is londy-boo. He will talk to him and call him londy-boo. This morning "bye bye londy boo!"

Reed can tell you all the characters in his favorite TV show - Mickey Mouse Playhouse. As the show starts he will name out Donald, Minny, Goofy, Mickey, Daisy and Pluto. I didn't even know that he knew anyone else's name other than Mickey but he went and named all of them - even Pete an occasional character on the show.

His counting is a bit disjointed. It used to be 1, 2, 4. Now it's 3, 7, 8, 9.

When asked what he wants to eat, he will always answer with Mac'n'cheese or sandwich. I think we need to expand his palate for some other foods though. He's not a fan at all of chicken. He loves cereal and his word for it is something like "der-ress". If you didn't know, there is no way to figure out what that word could possibly be. He will sometimes ask for an egg for breakfast. And thanks to Nana Branch, he must have "dippies" with his food (either ketchup or syrup depending on the food).

Loves "Cars" movie but he calls it Lightening McQueen. He loves Mater in the movie. We watch that movie on loop. I've introduced The Incredibles to the mix but he doesn't have the same attachment to it. I'd like to try Toy Story and Finding Nemo, I think he would love both. Maybe for Christmas.

We were running some errands and stopped by the Nissan dealer to return some parts Fogg didn't need. They had free popcorn in the lobby so Fogg got Reed a bag. Reed was eating it happily in the car when I ran into a store to grab something really quickly. I got back to the car and the popcorn was gone. I asked Reed "you all done with your popcorn?". His response was "Daddy eat it all". I look over at Fogg and he had a guilty look on his face. To Fogg's defense, Reed said he was all done so Fogg finished the bag while I was in the store. Reed totally just threw Fogg under the bus though.

That's all for now~
